In 1986 I played drums in the Johannisthal punk band Morticians. The band practised in a cellar on Fritz Heckert Straße in Berlin’s Mitte district. Across the street, the cobblestone paving was bordered directly by the Wall. Behind it was where the music was at, while at the same time East Berlin’s live music scene was also exploding. Undeterred by odysseys on the S-Bahn and tram, goths and leather….

Frank Bretschneider (1956) was active in the subcultural environment of the GDR’s Karl-Marx-Stadt (nowadays Chemnitz). The Karl-Marx-Stadt area was a nucleus of non-conformist activities in the GDR. Away from a prescribed socialist realism, a countercultural approach unfolded here as openly as was possible within a closed-off society. Moloko+ compiles the poems that Ace Farren Ford published in his 4 Thursday chapbooks: ‘A Year of Thursdays’, ‘Escape from beneath the Valley of Thursdays’, ‘Exiled once more to the Island of Thursdays’ and ‘Love Theme from Thursdays’ plus a chapter of previously unpublished poems ‘Beyond that farther Mountain of Thursdays’. These older and newer poems are combined in the book with a fine selection of Ace’s collages done between 2010 and 2022. Beautifully designed by rag from Vienna, this edition presents a wide view of Ace’s long practice as an artist and poet. Thursdays pays tribute to this multi-talented West-Coast legend.

tapetopia releases Happy Straps – Pleasure 1985-86

Happy Straps was deeply rooted in East Berlin’s alternative scene in the mid 1980s. Café Mosaik was a hotbed of the bohemian scene in Prenzlauer Berg, where dreamers, freaks and artists would meet – ‘negative elements’ who would positively charge each other’s batteries or drive each other insane about their prospects of finally being allowed to leave the GDR. At Café Mosaik Chris Schwartinsky and Jörg (‘Heini’) Heinemann, who had founded the band in Frankfurt-Oder in 1983, met Claudia Böhme and asked her to join the band as a singer…
