Jeph Jerman (Guam, 1959) started recording and performing under the name ‘Hands To’ in 1986. In those early works, for the greater part released on cassette, various electronic techniques were used to manipulate layers of field recordings. ‘Most of the early soundwork was sampler and tape loop based’, Jerman writes, ‘though over the course of ten years it evolved into using environmental recordings with very little to no manipulation or electronic processing’. After having moved to Seattle in 1996 and having been introduced to the experimental music scene there, Jerman dropped the monniker ‘Hands To’. The solo performances under his own name have since then centred around improvised and multi-layered works built from sounds made with natural objects, such as stones, shells, bones, driftwood or pine cones. ‘Most of my previous work could be interpreted as being ”idea-based“, concludes Jerman, ‘I find that most of my work nowadays is sound-based. I believe this is due to my growing interest in listening, in what happens when one listens, and my concomitant disinterest in contextualizing sound’.

Counter Culture Chronicles has now released on cassette Jeph Jerman’s piece ‘Voiced’. The single-sided C-90 contains a throbbing collage of fragmentized voices, hiss, birds, snippets of radio broadcasts: field recordings from a windy corner in an unhinged universe. Or an aural palimpsest, as is suggested in the handsome laser-printed booklet that completes this beautiful release.
