Dutch artist Bob Lens (1939) was trained as a painter and draughtsman from 1957 to 1960 at the Royal Arts Academy in The Hague and the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. Soon after these traditional trainings Lens’s ideas about art and being an artist changed dramatically under the influence of Nouveau Réalisme and Fluxus and in 1964 he took part in the first Dutch Fluxfest in Holland, where he joined forces with German/Danish Fluxus artist Addie Køpcke. Two years later Lens, always active and open to collaborations, worked with Dutch poets Simon Vinkenoog and Hans Wesseling on the now sought after poetry LP Woorden (Words). Everyday objects, words and sounds have been part of his work since and some of those objects, such as alarm clocks and plastic bags, have developed into themes in Lens’s work. His collection of plastic bags has been shown at the Verbeke Foundation, Belgium in 2016 and Stedelijk Museum Schiedam in 2019.
The Counter Culture Chronicles cassette In Concert and other Scores was put together on the occasion of the celebration of art’s birthday on 17 January 2020 organised by Bob Lens at HOK Gallery, The Hague. The limited edition cassette comes with an insert containing notes by the artist on the concepts behind the audio works Alarm Clocks and Vacuum Cleaners on either side of the cassette. Side A contains a long and hypnotic sound collage: rhythmically organised snippets of performances, everyday noises, noise, poetry and music centring around alarm clocks. Side B contains a collage around vacuum cleaners, dedicated to Robert Filliou and Addie Køpcke. Both pieces were previously released in Slowscan’s expert Fluxus Anthology of 1994.
