| Full-fledged psychedelic revivalism going on here, bathed in sitars, bells, vague religious musings, and even a reference to the Kent State shootings. Beginning with "Lady of Shalot" (adapted from a Tennyson poem), Loren's acoustic guitar and gruff vocal delivery (which sounds almost identical to Giant Sand's Howe Gelb) weave through 11 songs about death, Jesus, war, magic mirrors, and Japanese movie monsters with such conviction that it doesn't take much suspension of disbelief to imagine this album is some lost psych-rock gem. The warm production of Warren Defever (from His Name is Alive) helps matters, as does the sitar playing of Outrageous Cherry member Matt Smith, who appears almost throughout the album. Erika Hoffman of Godzuki is also featured prominently, singing and playing violin and bells. Overall, the album is pretty mellow and subtle; no fuzz guitar freakouts really. Rather, Loren chooses to explore the folkier side of psych with From the Michigan Floor. (source: All Music Guide) | ||

"Out of the gloomy basements of Ann Arbor Michigan flowed the horrid strains of a music never before heard. Experience it in all of its musty glory. Yes, Destroy All Monsters rises again", according to Mike Kelley's announcement of this edition, and: "the 3-CD set that introduced the world to pre-punk DAM." "Grow Live Monsters" is a selection of 8mm, super-8, and 16 mm film phantasies from the period 1971-76. While still at high school Cary Loren started a correspondence with underground filmmaker, actor, and performance artist Jack Smith, which led to a meeting in the summer of 1973. Shortly after that the artists' band Destroy All Monsters was formed by Mike Kelley. Jim Shaw, Cary Loren, and Niagara. Most films on this DVD revolve around this group of friends and the music they produced in basements and during live performances. The soundtrack is a mixture of vintage Destroy All Monsters and samples and recordings that reflect Smith's love of exotica. |

Loren manages to turn this unique footage into a high-energy, psychedelic work of art itself. The DVD contains a lot of material that has not been seen before and combines it with live audio recordings of the period. |

A 1963 student notebook written by John Sinclair and an essay written while under the influence of peyote. This work became the main 33 minute title track for the PEYOTEMIND CD, an improvisation recorded by MONSTER ISLAND with vocals added later by the author JOHN SINCLAIR. An early and important contribution to psychedelic culture, PEYOTEMIND was recorded in Detroit in one take in the fall of 2000. |

MUSIC IS REVOLUTION is a beautiful CD that has been released by BookBeat Gallery/The End Is Here Docusound, which are run by Cary Loren from Detroit. You may know Cary as an artist, as one of the founding member of the influential artists' band DESTROY ALL MONSTERS (together with Niagara, Mike Kelley and Jim Shaw) and as leader of MONSTER ISLAND. Cary has researched and documented for some time the all too often overlooked history of Detroit's radical, psychedelic and high-energy movement of the late sixties and early seventies. The CD MUSIC IS REVOLUTION is a truly wonderful document of a period that saw a unique and powerful mix of music, art, graphic design and political activism. PRESS RELEASE: |
