MIKE KELLEY - YUMMY PUFFY MOMMY YONI
AUDIO CD

(Compound Annex #15)

EUROPE ORDERS ONLY

€ 10.00 | £ 7.00

The cover of Mike Kelley's latest CD shows a moonlit landscape in which a pink unicorn is being buttfucked by a a well-hung satyr. The female unicorn (Kelley has provided the traditionally sex-less creature with a delicate pussy) rears in fright or pleasure while the satyr's mouth drops open for lust. 'Yummy Puffy Mommy Yoni' reads the title of the CD, and the subscript: 'Mike Kelley performs ethereal melodies on the Alesis QS6.1 electric keyboard'.

The CD contains 26 short tracks in which Kelley explores the possibilities of his synthesizer assisted by friends and colleagues. Doing so Kelley playfully deconstructs New Age music, with which certain synthesizer effects have become associated. Pompous track titles such as 'Birth Of The World', 'The Epic Dawn', 'Winds Of The Nether Region' (ha ha), leave no doubt about Kelley's intention to invade and bring to its doom the New Age. Other titles refer to composers, such as 'Vanginus' (a perversion of Vangelis), 'Emersonian' (which both refers to the transcendentalism of the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson and to composer Keith Emerson), and 'Plink Plank Plonk' (a title borrowed from Leroy Anderson's 'Plink Plank Plunk').

Unicorns and satyrs are not the only fantasy creatures that turn up on this CD: the title 'The Bowels Of Ghidrah', a dark throbbing hum interspersed with wails from the deep, is a reference to a three-headed monster from a Godzilla movie. And finally, the title track, in which 'Yummy Puffy Mommy Yoni' is repeated by a choir consisting of Molly Fitzgerald, Mary Clare Stevens, and Amy Wong, stands midway between a nursery rhyme, a commercial jingle, and a pseudo-religious chant. 'Yoni', by the way, stands for 'vagina' in the Kama Sutra.

The 26 pieces - beautifully recorded and mixed by Scott Benzel - leave no stone unturned when it comes to deconstructing New Age notions and music. At the same time they give proof of Kelley's versatility and creativity as a musician. The fun Kelley and his friends must have had in putting this CD together is certainly contagious.

MIKE KELLEY - DAY IS DONE
2 AUDIO CD SET

(Compound Annex #14)

EUROPE ORDERS ONLY

€ 15.00 | £ 10.35

Postage not included

DAY IS DONE is Kelley's latest project, which consists of reconstructions of photographs of extracurricular activities found in highschool yearbooks. Over the years Kelley has collected hundreds of such ritualistic images and arranged them into rough categories, such as: religious performances, thugs, hicks, satanic imagery, and equestrian events. The double CD DAY IS DONE is presented as the "original motion picture soundtrack" of the project. Departing from the yearbook photographs Kelley plays off themes, lyrics, and musical styles against each other in a deconstructionist and hallucinatory opera. The double CD was released on Kelley's Compound Annex label and contains forty-nine tracks with titles as "Horse Dance Of The False Virgin", "Ol' Filthy", and "Empty Gym". Music and lyrics by Mike Kelley, arrangements and orchestration by Scott Benzel.

A new release by Mike Kelley's Compound Annex and Cary Loren's The End Is Here! labels (2003). Part of the CD was recorded live in Rotterdam on June 12, 1998 at Nighttown as part of I Rip You, You Rip Me, a series of exhibitions, performances, symposiums, and workshops examining the radical subculture and music scene of Detroit in the late sixties and early seventies. The other part was recorded live in Vienna on June 15, 1998 at Flex in association with Crossings, an exhibition of sound-related art presented at the Kunsthalle Wien. Directly addressing the theme of I Rip You, You Rip Me, in these concerts Destroy All Monsters utilized material lifted from such Detroit-based bands of the late sixties as the MC5, the Bob Seger System, grand Funk Railroad, the SRC, the Amboy Dukes, etc., as well as the local comedian Soupy Sales, and period recordings of broadcast television. Intro by Charlemagne Palestine & Scanner. Guest performance by Jördis Cordua.

This hour-long electronic composition by Kelley and Scanner explores the so-called 'electronic voice phenomena' associated with the psychic researchers Friedrich Jürgenson and Konstantin Raudive. Waveform anomalies, found on blank digital minidiscs 'exposed' to sites in Paris linked to the city's spiritualist, avant-garde, and pop musical histories, were mixed to produce this beautiful and haunting soundscape. Commissioned by the Centre Georges Pompidou in 2002 for the exhibition Sonic Process.

MIKE KELLEY/PAUL MCCARTHY/VIOLENT ONSEN GEISHA - COMP O.S.O.
AUDIO CD

(Compound Annex #12)

EUROPE ORDERS ONLY

€ 10.00 | £ 6.70

Following up on their previous releases, Sod and Sodie Sock and Studio C, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy and Masaya Nakahara (aka Violent Onsen Geisha) team up again for Comp O.S.O., recorded live at the Vienna Secession in 1998. The CD features a live improvisation performed by the three artists on the opening night of the Kelley/McCarthy installation 'Sod and Sodie Sock' - an immense faux military encampment made up of barrack tents, a shower room, a mess hall, and various other environments. For several weeks this structure was the site of numerous improvisations performed by Kelley and McCarthy aided by a cast of volunteers.
These actions are the basis for the second section of the CD, titled 'training exercises', and include: In the Mess Hall, an improvisational percussion workout with pots and pans; Wet Oatmeal and Three Voices; and Ramp Drag, which documents the tones produced by wooden table-like furniture pieces being slowly dragged over a stone floor to create an incredibly lush sound.

This CD also includes Duet for Two Organs Used by Hermann Nitsch in 1978. In April of 1978 Kelley and McCarthy each loaned Nitsch two, almost identical, plastic chord organs for his performance of the 'Orgies Mysteries Theatre' in Venice CA. The organs were used to produce constant background drone. McCarthy's organ was damaged so that it already produced a constant random drone, while Kelley's organ had two keys taped down to create a similar effect. These organs have now been reunited - joined together again in an eternal duet.
